Biological Holistic Dentistry…and where to find it

Biological dentistry is the holistic way to take care of your mouth. It looks at the whole person and not just your mouth.

They will consider your nutrition, lifestyle, airway, etc., and how they all play a role in the health of your mouth. In addition, they also are more aware of the emotional and spiritual factors that may contribute to your overall physical health. As such, they look for ways to help and heal the most that are less intrusive and anxiety- producing. It uses materials that are most compatible with your body and natural looking, trying to actually be good for your health and not just look it. They will use treatments such as ozone therapy, be mercury-free, composite filings, be familiar with meridians, natural support supplements, and homeopathic aids, all to help you and have minimal if any side effects.

To learn more in depth how to take care of your teeth THE RIGHT WAY and learning the holistic aspect of dentristry, I love the book, “Healthy Mouth, Healthy You” by Dr. Michelle Jorgensen.

A brief run down of knowing if a dentist is biological/ holistic by asking the dentist these 10 Questions:

  1. Is it a “mercury free" and “mercury safe" dental practice?

2. Do they have a special protocol for removing mercury fillings?

3. Do they use digital x-rays?

4. What is their position on fluoride?

5. Do they are nutrition in relation to dental health?

6. What is their position on root canals?

7. Do they place bio-mimetic dental restorations?

8. Do they have non-toxic recommendations for dental products?

9. Do they use a laser to diagnose dental cavities?

10. What is their position on tooth remineralization?

If they score at least 7 out of 10, they are truly whole- body and health focused.

A quick Google search, knowing what to look for on websites, and contacting specifically to get answers can help you identify what places are considered biological dentists. Otherwise, Dr. Jorgensen has a map that can help you get started on that search of like minded dentists on your holistic journey!

Our bodies are interconnected, rather than compartmentalized. It's about time we started treating it that way. Thank goodness for these options we have to start implementing these holistic options for our mouths!
